Welcome to the old home of beloved St. Francis. This is another of my favorite places in Italy. Below is the Basilica di San Francesco. In the lower part one can visit the grave of the monk who changed the direction of Catholicism...a truly spiritual experience.
The town itself is rich in beautiful architecture and art.
For those who do not know, St. Francis had a close female follower and counterpart, Santa Chiara. Here is the church named for her. There are garments of hers and St. Francis on the lower level...and other relics...teeth! These people are not mythological beings, but real people! The columns and the facade belong to the Roman temple of Minerva, but inside is a church.
